No-result Checklist

Not every no-result has the same cause. Use this checklist to determine whether the problem is in language, product data, technique, filters or assortment.

Step 1: Determine impact

  • How often does the search term occur?
  • Is the term commercially relevant?
  • Is this a one-time error or structural pattern?

Step 2: check spelling

  • Does the search question include a typo?
  • Does fault tolerance work for this variant?
  • Can the correct term be found?

Step 3: check synonyms

  • Does the customer use a different name than the catalogue?
  • Is it a local or industry-specific term?
  • Should an explicit synonym be added?

Step 4: check product data

  • Does the product actually exist in the feed or index?
  • Are relevant attributes filled?
  • Is the product in the right category?

Step 5: check filters and rules

  • Does a set filter exclude all products?
  • Does a merchandising rule block a result?
  • Is the product available for this market or store?

Step 6: rate assortment

  • Do the customer expect a product that is not sold?
  • Can an appropriate alternative be shown?
  • Is the demand large enough for assortment research?

Step 7: Measure after adjustment

  • Has the no-result disappeared?
  • Are results actually clicked?
  • Does the search term eventually lead to conversion?
Don’t solve zero-result searches just by showing “something.” The new result must be relevant enough to really support the search intent.
