Measure not only clicks, but the full route to purchase.
Search conversion shows the extent to which the search experience contributes to relevant product choices and orders. Reliable measurement starts with a clear event chain.
Define the search interaction
Capture search, results display and product click separately. This way, it remains visible where visitors drop out and which step needs to be improved.
Record the order independently
An order event must also be saved when a reliable search click has not yet been found. The attribution status can then be determined separately.
Use consistent identifiers
Store ID, session or visitor ID, product ID and order ID must keep the same meaning in all systems that make up the chain.
Make attributed and unattributed visible
An order without an appropriate click should not be forced to be linked to search. Transparency is more important than an artificially high attribution rate.
Segment the outcome
Compare queries, devices, markets and stores. An average can hide large differences between SKU-search, category questions, and orientation queries.
Combine with quality signals
Conversion gains context by bringing CTR, zero-result searches, reformulations, order value and stock.
