Academy · Lesson 6

Merchandising strengthens relevance, not the other way around.

Commercial rules should refine relevant results. They should not determine that a poorly fitting product will come out on top anyway.

Boost with reason

Use inventory, campaign, or product priority only for results that match the content of the search query.

Boost & Bury

Bury checked

For example, lower products at limited availability without automatically making them completely untraceable.

Ranking rules →

Campaigns

Work with a clear duration, target group and search context so that temporary commercial control also remains temporary.

Campaigns →

Banners

Use banners as additional information for appropriate queries, not as a substitute for good results.

Search banners →

Stock and margin

Allow business signals to be taken into account in addition to relevance and record when they are not allowed to intervene.

Measurement plan →

Experimenting

Measure changes on click behavior and conversion and save the original search quality as a guardrail.

Experiments →
Practical test

Would this product still make sense without the campaign?

If the answer is no, the merchandising rule is probably too aggressive. Start with relevant candidates and then use commercial signals to send within that group.
